Since December 2020, drivers of zero-emission vehicles have been able to add a green flash to their number plates – a green panel on the left-hand edge. It’s optional, it’s free to choose, and it’s become a common sight as electric cars have taken a bigger share of new registrations.
In this guide
What is a green number plate?
It’s a standard white or yellow plate with a vertical green band on the left. Everything else – the font, the characters and the spacing – follows the normal rules. The flash can sit on its own or behind a flag and national identifier.

Who can have one?
Only zero-emission vehicles – cars and vans that emit no CO2 from the tailpipe. In practice that means:
- Battery electric vehicles (BEVs)
- Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles
And not:
- ✗ Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs)
- ✗ Self-charging hybrids
- ✗ Range-extended vehicles that have a petrol engine
If your V5C shows CO2 emissions of 0g/km, you qualify. The green flash applies to cars, vans, motorcycles, taxis and larger vehicles that are genuinely zero-emission.
Is it compulsory?
No. Green plates are optional. New electric cars often arrive with them fitted, but you can choose standard plates if you prefer.
What are the benefits?
The green flash makes zero-emission vehicles easy to identify. That’s useful for:
- local schemes such as cheaper or free parking for EVs, where councils choose to offer them
- access to zero-emission or low-traffic zones
- recognition at charging bays
Benefits depend on local schemes, so check your council’s rules.
Can I add a green flash to my existing plates?
Yes, if your vehicle qualifies – you’ll need new plates. Choose Green EV flash in the plate builder and pick any legal style, including 3D gel and 4D. The flash can be combined with the UK identifier and Union flag, which also means no UK sticker in most of Europe.
Frequently asked questions
Can a plug-in hybrid have green number plates?
No. The green flash is only for zero-emission vehicles. Fitting one to a hybrid could lead to a fine.
Do green number plates cost more?
They’re the same plates with an extra printed panel. We charge a small amount per plate for the flash.
Can I have 4D characters with a green flash?
Yes. The flash doesn’t change the rules for the characters, so 3D gel, 4D and 5D styles are all available.
Do I tell the DVLA I’ve added green plates?
No. It doesn’t change your registration. You only need to be sure your vehicle qualifies.
