Walk around any car meet this year and you’ll see them: plates cut around the outline of the letters, with glossy black characters sitting on a frosted white or yellow base. They’re called bubble plates (or contour-cut plates), and they’re the biggest show plate trend of 2026.
In this guide
What is a bubble plate?
A bubble plate swaps the rectangle for a shape that follows your text. Each character is surrounded by a smooth, rounded border of acrylic, and the borders merge into one continuous piece. The characters are usually domed gel or 4D acrylic, so they stand proud of the base.

Are bubble plates road legal?
No. Bubble plates are show plates – the shape, the missing reflective background and the lack of legal margins all fall outside the rules in our number plate law guide. They’re perfect for:
- car shows and meets (displayed while parked on private ground)
- garages, dens and showrooms
- photoshoots and social media
- gifts and keepsakes
Keep your legal plates on the car and add the bubble plate at the event. See show plates explained.
How they’re made
- Your text is set in a bold plate-style font and offset to create the bubble outline.
- The outline is laser-cut from acrylic – frosted white or translucent yellow.
- The characters are printed or cut, then finished with domed gel or bonded 4D acrylic.
- The edges are flame-polished smooth so the plate is safe to handle.
Design tips
- Short words work best. Four to seven characters give the boldest look.
- Use one word per plate. Two plates – one white, one yellow – make a great pair, like “SHOW” and “TIME”.
- Match your car. Yellow bases pop on dark paint; white suits bright colours.
- Think about where it’ll sit. Measure the space on your dashboard or grille.
Here’s how our builder draws a bubble plate – type any text and it’s cut to fit:

Frequently asked questions
How big is a bubble plate?
It depends on your text. Our builder calculates the size as you type – a six-letter word is roughly 380mm long and 105mm tall.
Can I have my registration as a bubble plate?
Yes, as a show plate. It still can’t be used on a public road.
Are bubble plates fragile?
They’re cut from tough acrylic with rounded edges, so they’re surprisingly sturdy. Avoid bending them.
Can I have coloured characters on a bubble plate?
Yes – choose a character colour in show mode in the builder.
