Stolen, Lost or Damaged Number Plates: How to Replace Them

What to do when a plate is stolen, lost, cracked or faded – who to tell, which documents you need, and how to get legal replacements quickly.

Cracked faded number plate next to a new replacement

Whether a plate has been stolen, fallen off on the motorway or simply cracked and faded, the fix is the same: order legal replacements from a registered supplier. Here’s how to do it quickly and safely.

If your plates were stolen

  1. Report the theft to the police straight away (101 or online) and note the crime reference number. Stolen plates are often used for cloning, so a record protects you.
  2. Keep the reference – you’ll need it if fines start arriving.
  3. Order replacements with your ID and V5C.
  4. Fit anti-theft screws this time.

You can’t legally drive without both plates fitted (or the rear plate, for a motorcycle), so arrange replacements quickly.

If a plate is lost or fell off

A plate that falls off on the road is a common motorway casualty, often after old sticky pads fail. Order a replacement and fit it securely with screws or plenty of fresh pads – see how to fit number plates. Consider reporting it to the police if you think someone could pick it up.

If a plate is damaged or faded

Cracks, peeling, fading and discolouration all make a plate harder to read and can fail the MOT or lead to a fine. Typical causes:

DamageUsual cause
Cracks around screw holesOver-tightened screws, vibration
Peeling or bubblingWater getting behind the acrylic
Faded charactersOld, low-quality printing and UV
Yellowed gelCheap resin and sunlight
Broken cornersParking knocks, car washes, frost
New white and yellow printed number plates

What you need to order replacements

The same as any road-legal plate: photo ID and proof of entitlement, usually your V5C. If your V5C is with the DVLA, use a V379 temporary certificate or a V11 reminder. Full list: documents needed for number plates.

Ordering replacement plates

  1. Enter your registration in the plate builder – it formats it legally.
  2. Choose front, rear or both. You can match your original style or upgrade to 3D gel, 4D or 5D.
  3. Upload your documents at checkout so we can start straight away.

Disposing of old plates

Don’t put old plates in the bin whole – someone could reuse them. Cut or snap them through the characters, then recycle the pieces separately. Acrylic plates can go in general waste or a plastics recycling point that accepts acrylic.

Replacement plates, made fast

Type your registration, choose your style and upload your V5C at checkout.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive with one number plate while I wait for a replacement?

No – cars must display both plates. Get replacements as quickly as possible.

Do I need my V5C to replace a damaged plate?

You need proof of entitlement, which is usually the V5C. Other documents such as a V11 or V379 are accepted.

Should I report a damaged plate?

No need – just replace it. Only report stolen or lost plates to the police.

Can I order just one plate?

Yes – choose “Front only” or “Rear only” in the builder.
