How to Clean and Care for 3D and 4D Number Plates

How to wash 3D gel, 4D and 5D plates without scratching or lifting characters – plus why plates fade, crack and peel, and how to make yours last.

Microfibre cloth wiping a glossy gel number plate with water droplets

Raised plates look their best when they’re clean, and a little care keeps the gel glossy and the 4D edges crisp for years. It also keeps you legal – a plate cameras can’t read because of road film is still an unreadable plate.

The safe way to wash any plate

  1. Rinse first with plenty of water to lift grit before you touch the plate.
  2. Use car shampoo and a soft microfibre mitt or sponge.
  3. Wipe gently along the plate, not in circles over raised characters.
  4. Rinse again and dry with a clean microfibre cloth.

That’s it. You don’t need special products.

What to avoid

  • ✗ Abrasive pads, polishes or cutting compounds – they scratch acrylic and dull gel
  • ✗ Solvents such as acetone, thinners or strong degreasers – they can cloud acrylic and weaken adhesive
  • ✗ Stiff brushes on raised characters
  • ✗ Pressure washing at close range – keep the lance at least 30cm away and don’t aim at character edges
  • ✗ Ice scrapers on frozen plates – use warm water instead

Why plates fade, crack and peel

  • UV and age break down cheap reflective sheeting and printing, so characters fade and backgrounds yellow.
  • Over-tightened screws crack acrylic around the holes, and the cracks spread with vibration.
  • Water ingress behind the acrylic lets the reflective layer delaminate and peel.
  • Harsh chemicals – from traffic film removers to wheel cleaners – attack the edges.

A faded or cracked plate is an MOT failure and can lead to a fine if it’s hard to read. See number plate MOT failures and replacing damaged plates.

Winter care

Salt, grit and road film build up fast in winter. Rinse plates when you wash the car, and give the rear plate a quick wipe after long motorway drives so cameras can read it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take 4D plates through an automatic car wash?

Yes. Well-bonded 4D characters handle car washes. If a character ever feels loose, replace the plate rather than gluing it.

Can I polish my number plates?

Avoid cutting polishes. A spray detailer or quick detailer on a microfibre cloth is fine.

Why have my gel plates gone yellow?

Low-quality resins yellow in UV light over time. Replace the plates if the characters are no longer clearly black.

Can I use a pressure washer?

Yes, from at least 30cm away and not aimed directly at character edges.
