A personalised plate is the most visible way to put your stamp on a car. The trick is doing it in a way that stays legal on the road – and saving the wilder ideas for show plates.
In this guide
Ideas that work on the road
These rely on the registration itself, displayed in the standard font and spacing:
- Initials – a prefix or dateless number with your initials, like “A1 JDS” style registrations.
- Short dateless numbers – a one- or two-letter, one- or two-digit number looks exclusive and hides the car’s age.
- Names using current formats – numbers that read naturally as letters when spaced correctly.
- Birth years or meaningful numbers – in a dateless format.
- Your car’s model – registrations that reference the model in a legal format.
Pair a short registration with a short legal plate and 4D characters for maximum impact.
Ideas that only work as show plates
Anything that needs a different font, colour, spacing or extra text is a show plate:
- your name or nickname spelled exactly
- club, crew or meet names
- inside jokes and slang
- slogans under the registration
- contour-cut bubble plates – see bubble number plates
- gifts – a name plate for the garage wall; see our number plate gift guide
Show plates are brilliant for events and gifts but must never be used on the road. See show plates explained.
What the DVLA bans
Before each new release, the DVLA withholds combinations that could be read as offensive, rude, discriminatory or politically sensitive – for example numbers that spell swear words when the digits are read as letters. Those registrations are never issued, and the DVLA can also withdraw existing registrations that are displayed to spell something offensive.
Tips for choosing a personalised registration
- Say it out loud – if it only works with the spacing changed, it won’t work legally.
- Check the age rule – you can’t put a newer registration on an older car. See how to read number plates.
- Think about resale – very personal registrations are best kept on retention when you sell.
- Budget for plates – a cherished number deserves quality 4D or 5D plates.
