A show plate is the finishing touch on a build – the bit people photograph. Here’s how to design one that looks deliberate rather than random, and how to use it without getting into trouble.
In this guide
Start with your build’s palette
Pick one accent colour from the car – brake calipers, wheels, interior stitching or a livery stripe – and use it for the characters or the border. One accent looks intentional; three looks busy.
| Car | Plate idea |
|---|---|
| Black car, red calipers | Carbon background, red 4D characters, red border |
| White car, bronze wheels | White plate, gold characters |
| Grey car, yellow details | Yellow bubble plate with black gel characters |
| Blue car | White plate, blue border, black 4D characters |
Choose a finish
- Neon 4D – coloured acrylic characters that glow in flash photos
- Gel – glossy and subtle, great on bubble plates
- 4D 5mm – the deepest shadows for photos
- Carbon background – instantly motorsport
Fonts and text
Show plates can use rounded, heavy or slim lettering. Keep text short – a name, model code or crew name. A slogan along the bottom (“MEET 26”, “TRACK READY”) adds a finishing detail.
Bubble plates
The trend of the year: contour-cut plates that follow the shape of the letters. Great on dashboards and grilles. See bubble number plates.

Using show plates at events
- Arrive on legal plates.
- Fit the show plate on site, over or in place of the legal plate while parked on private ground.
- Use magnetic holders, quick-release clips or removable pads so nothing is damaged.
- Swap back before you drive off – ANPR cameras on the exit road don’t care that you’ve been at a show.

Track days
Many circuits ask for plates to be removed or taped during sessions. A show plate with your name or number is a nice touch in the paddock for photos.
